Intermediates: from lubricants to lipstick

In a manner of speaking, intermediates were already included in the very first ExxonMobil Chemical catalogues. The company marketed isopropyl alcohol, its first chemical product, in 1920. Nowadays the range of intermediates can be divided into four main categories, namely oxo-alcohols, plasticizers, fluids and synthetic fluids.

Synthetic oxo-alcohols are used in a wide range of end applications such as adhesives, surfactants, lubricants and additives. The most important internal application is as an ingredient for ExxonMobil's Jayflex plasticizers. These ultimately reach the market as flexible vinyl plastic.

The fluids form a very diverse family of solvents, which in turn can be further divided into hydrocarbon and oxygenated fluids. These form the basis of countless possible applications, including coatings (paints), inks, adhesives, process fluids and agricultural chemicals.

An exceptional aspect for ExxonMobil Chemical clients is that they are able to contact the intermediates specialists not only for information on these complex products but also for general advice related to toxicology and safety, health and environment legislation.

The best known synthetic products are the lubricants used in cars - such as Mobil 1 motor oil - and industry, and even in ships and airplanes. Synthetic oils are also increasingly being used in products for personal hygiene such as shampoo, face cream and lipstick.
