The history of the Kerkrade plant, producer of flexible packaging films for food and labelling, is still young. The plant was built in 1992. Products are mostly shipped to European countries. In 1994, the company was certified ISO 9001 and set up a hygiene program (AIB - American Institute of Baking) in order to meet the standards of the food sector. What We Do ExxonMobil Chemical Films Europe manufactures and markets films for packaging essentially in bioriented polypropylene (BOPP), but also in high density polyethylene, (HDPE). The raw material used for BOPP film is polypropylene resin, which is usually found in the form of solid granules. They are kept in about 80 silos, which can be found on the site. These raw materials are transported from the four corners of Europe, but also from Japan and the United States. OPP film is used for the packaging of different food products (biscuits, crisps and candies), but also for non-food applications such as detergents, soaps and paper ream, and also for labelling applications (drinks, detergents, toiletries - in fact many forms or shape of bottles and containers). Its protective qualities (for odours, oxygen, water vapour,...) and its shiny appearance make it a very attractive option in the flexible packaging market. The manufactured films can be transparent, white and metallised. They are marketed under the brand names BICOR, OPPALYTE, METALLYTE, LABEL-LYTE, HICOR, TWIST-LYTE and DIGILYTE. At the end of 1996, an HDPE film (OHD), baptised HICOR, was launched to represent the new generation of flexible packing. These films - which have deadfold and directional tear properties - have been developed to be used for different applications, like candy wrappers or in combination with other packaging substrates. Marketing ExxonMobil Chemical Films Europe is a leading company in the European market, for the production of OPP films. These products are marketed through sales offices in France, Poland, Germany, Spain, Holland, United kingdom, Hungary, Italy, Australia, Japan and China and a network of agents in Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. The customers of ExxonMobil Chemical Films Europe are primarily converters, who buy to print and otherwise transform the films, and secondly end-users, who buy the films to pack or label their products.
