The Rotterdam Plasticizers & Intermediates Plant in Rozenburg (Rotterdam Europoort) actually consists of three plants, the Rotterdam Oxo-Alcohol Plant (ROP) in Rozenburg and the Phthalic Anhydride Plant (PAN) and Rotterdam Plasticizer Plant(RPP) both in Rotterdam Botlek.

The Rotterdam Oxo-Alcohol Plant in Rozenburg was purchased in 1982 from chemical company AKZO. It produces oxo-alcohols, which are used as raw material for the Plasticizers Plant. The Phthalic Anhydride Plant was built in 1991 and produces raw materials for the plasticizer production. The Rotterdam Plasticizer Plant has been operational since 1978. Most of the raw materials required are produced at the PAN en ROP.

What We Do

ExxonMobil Chemical Holland BV produces phthalic esters, the most commonly used types of plasticizers. Oxo-alcohol and phthalic anhydride are the raw materials used for these plasticizers.

During the production process, relatively low pressures and temperatures of approximately 200°C are used in the reactors to produce esters. This process is highly automated and is followed by a series of purification and quality improvement steps. The product is then stored in tanks until it is delivered to the customers.

Most of the oxo-alcohols produced by ExxonMobil Chemical Holland BV in The Netherlands are used as raw materials for the plasticizers plant. Some of the oxo-alcohols are sold to third parties on the European market under the brand name Exxal. The ExxonMobil Chemical Holland BV plasticizers are supplied to the PVC industry in Europe, Africa and Asia under various brand names, including Jayflex.
