1. How does ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants Company (“ExxonMobil F&L”) define its approach to sustainability?
ExxonMobil F&L recognizes the importance of addressing sustainability, which we define as balancing economic growth, social development and environmental protection, so that future generations are not compromised by actions taken today.

We address the challenge of sustainability as part of our focused commitment to act as a responsible employer, business partner, and neighbor. In fact, our sustainability platform directly reflects Exxon Mobil Corporation’s (“ExxonMobil”) six corporate citizenship focus areas. These are: reducing environmental impacts; managing climate change risks; protecting safety and health; respecting human rights and security concerns; promoting economic development; and ensuring industry-leading corporate governance.

2. Is this a new effort for the company?
ExxonMobil has a long-term focus on the key aspects of corporate citizenship including reducing environmental impacts, protecting safety and health, and promoting economic development. Finding, developing, and delivering reliable and affordable supplies of energy to support economic progress have long been the foundation of ExxonMobil’s business. A key goal of our corporate citizenship efforts is to address the challenge of sustainability through our six key focus areas.

3. Have you issued public reports detailing your sustainability efforts?
ExxonMobil has for many years issued an annual Corporate Citizenship Report, which is focused on the corporation’s performance in six citizenship focus areas. This report describes ExxonMobil’s efforts to meet the projected increase in energy demand to support growing populations and expanding economies, while also protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The report provides clarity on the corporation’s position and is available on the ExxonMobil website.

5. Do you have an environmental policy in place? If so, what are some of the key provisions of that policy?
Consistent with ExxonMobil's environment policy and Protect Tomorrow. Today. initiative, ExxonMobil F&L pursues the following environmental mission:

"ExxonMobil F&L is dedicated to reducing environmental impacts and resource utilization in the manufacture, distribution, use and disposition of our products by:

    • Providing customers with technology-leading products and services with benefits such as improved fuel economy/emissions, extended equipment life, and reduced used oil generation;

    • Complying with regulations and applying responsible standards where none exist, while taking structured steps to continuously improve environmental performance of our operations, including greenhouse gas emissions;

    • Establishing select goals and tracking progress;

    • Openly communicating environmental results and experiences, internally and externally, as we strive to be recognized by stakeholders for responsible and effective care for the environment; and

    • Seeking constructive ongoing dialogue with governments and others to encourage adoption of environmental standards, regulations, and laws that are based on sound science and consider risks, costs, and benefits."

6. Do any of your products play a role in the development of alternative energy sources?
We recognize that all energy sources will play a role in meeting future global energy demand. To meet the challenges of diverse power generation applications, such as geothermal, nuclear and wind power, we leverage our industry-leading technology and expertise to formulate lubricants that provide exceptional equipment protection for even some of the most extreme conditions. Our industrial lubricants are used around the world in windmill turbines; geothermal and cogeneration plants; and hydroelectric installations and nuclear facilities. 7. In what ways have you made sustainability considerations a part of your company’s everyday operations?
ExxonMobil F&L’s industry-leading processes and systems in its operations support the progress of sustainability every day.

Through the corporate-wide Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS), we deploy environmental, health, safety, and security standards and expectations across our global operations in a disciplined and uniform approach that meets ISO 14001 environmental management system requirements. ISO 14001 comprises a set of requirements for environmental management systems established by the International Organization of Standardization in 1996 (and updated in 2004) for companies to institute enterprise-wide systems that control the environmental impacts and aspects of their operations.

Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd, a recognized international management system auditor and certifier specializing in ISO standards, routinely evaluates ExxonMobil’s deployment of OIMS and has concluded that the system and its deployment meet ISO 14001 requirements.

In fact, Lloyd’s has stated that it believes ExxonMobil to be among the industry leaders in integrating environmental management considerations into its business processes for ongoing operations and planning for future projects.

8. How do your purchasing practices support sustainability?
Our contracts with suppliers address issues such as environmental compliance, employment practices, and product safety, as pertinent. This approach is consistent with ExxonMobil's publicly stated operating principles which are outlined in the Corporate Citizenship Report and Standards of Business Conduct.

9. What are you doing specifically to support the communities in which you operate?
ExxonMobil F&L's focus on safety and the environment in our operations helps support the health of our workforce and preservation of adjacent communities. We focus support at the local level by creating employment opportunities and supporting local businesses, communities, and organizations.

ExxonMobil believes that well-designed contributions programs strengthen society by raising the standard of living and the stability of the communities in which we live and do business. They also align with our pledge of good corporate citizenship and contribute to ExxonMobil being a partner, neighbor, employer and supplier of choice around the world. 10. How does the company encourage responsible used oil disposition among consumers?
In order to help consumers with the challenge of proper used oil disposition, ExxonMobil F&L has supported the Earth911.com organization in North America since 2004. Through its website, consumers can find relevant information about reducing, re-using and recycling their used products in general, and identify nearby locations specifically for used oil collection. Building on the website’s success, ExxonMobil F&L and Earth911.com embarked on an initiative to expand the site's used oil collection locator service beyond North America to European and Latin American markets so that more consumers can find information necessary to properly dispose of their used oil.

11. Have your efforts to support key focus areas such as the environment, safety, etc., been acknowledged by others?
Over the years, ExxonMobil F&L has been recognized for our contributions toward addressing the challenge of sustainability.

E.ON UK, a leading energy and utility supplier in the United Kingdom, awarded ExxonMobil F&L its inaugural Sustainable Business award in 2009. Selected from all E.ON UK suppliers, ExxonMobil F&L was recognized for helping the British power company achieve significant operating cost savings through lubrication efficiency. They also acknowledged our contributions in helping the utility significantly reduce lubricant consumption and used oil generation by extending oil life through recycling and by switching to synthetic lubes.

The United Kingdom Institute of Transport Management singled out Mobil 1™ ESP in 2005 as the "Best OEM-Approved Lubricants" for its ability to "protect vehicles and help prolong the life of emission reduction systems." Mobil 1 ESP, with its patented formulation, was also recognized by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey as a winner of the 2009 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award in the Environmental Category.

Ten of ExxonMobil F&L operating sites around the world have been recognized by governmental agencies for exemplary performance in the environmental, safety, health, and/or security domains. Further, our campus in Fairfax, Virginia USA has recently been recognized for both exemplary energy utilization (US EPA Energy Star) and waste recycling programs.
