Emissions

Thanks to its up-to-date cleaning facilities, the Slagen refinery boasts very low emissions of oil to water and sulfur dioxide to the air.

In order to avoid sulphur acidification, sulfur is removed from the gasoline, diesel and light fuel oils. Removal of sulfur from the fuel gas used at the refinery also ensures that sulfur removed from products is not emitted to the air.

All waste water is treated in three stages, ending with biological decomposition of oil residues, before it is discharged to the sea. The refinery is well equipped with state-of-the- art oil spill preparedness equipment to contain and collect oil on the sea if an incident were to occur.

Environmental performance
The current emission figures and environmental focus areas are described in the year status report on the environment and corporate responsibility.

European environmental directive
T
he Slagen refinery does very well compared to other refineries for efficient use of energy/emissions to the air and discharges to water and air.

Over the last years, the refinery has further reduced its NOx emissions by installation of NOx burners. In 2008, a project is implemented at the refinery that will further reduce SO2 by around 250 tons yearly.
