Beyond 2020: An ExxonMobil podcast
The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2020 sulphur cap has had a major impact on the marine industry.
However,
this is not the end of the voyage – the IMO has announced plans to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least
50% by
2050, compared with 2008 levels.
The marine industry has embarked on a journey that will result in some far-reaching changes to vessel operations. To
help unravel the facts, ExxonMobil has invited a cross-section of maritime experts to evaluate the likely impact of
the
changing emission regulations in a series of in-depth podcasts. Each conversation looks at a specific topic, which
is
discussed by experienced marine industry professionals who have a detailed knowledge of the subject. Listen in on
the
debates and learn what could happen beyond 2020.
Episode 1: Beyond 2020 – Where do we go from here?
In the first episode, facilitator Richard Meade, Managing Editor of Lloyd’s List, discusses post-2020 options for the marine industry with Luca Volta, Marine Fuels Venture Manager, ExxonMobil; Eirik Nyhus, Director, DNV GL; and Lars Malmbratt, General Manager of Stena Bulk Bunker Procurement.

Part 1: The changing fuels landscape
Evolving emission regulations will see the development of new fuel formulations. Will there be a single solution or is the industry facing an even more complex fuels landscape?
-
Part 2: The role of new technology
The drive to reduce vessel emissions isn’t only about fuel formulation; new technologies will also play a role. How much can wind-assist, battery power and solar cells realistically contribute?
-
Part 3: New fuels, new lubricants
The combustion characteristics of new fuel formulations will call for next-generation lubricants. Is there sufficient on-board knowledge to handle these complexities or will additional training be required?
