By switching to a 100 BN cylinder oil and implementing Mobil℠ Cylinder Condition Monitoring, Pacific International Lines (PIL) was able to put a stop to cold corrosion and optimise oil feed rates on the Kota Sabas, a 51,500 ton container vessel.
The cylinder oil feed rate was lowered to 0.9 g/kWh with high reserve BN levels averaging at 35. This resulted in improved engine performance, increased vessel reliability and a reduction in oil consumption of 36 per cent. No visible signs of corrosion were found on the engine’s liners following the switch.
Scrape down analysis indicated that additional savings could be available through further feed rate optimisation.
