Offshore exploration company Polarcus had uncovered engine problems across its fleet of seismic research vessels related to the appearance of sludge, lacquering and carbon deposits. ExxonMobil engineers advised that the fleet would benefit from a higher-quality engine oil with improved detergency and dispersant qualities. They recommended a move to Mobil Delvac™ 1640.
Engineers began by changing over the engine oil on a Polarcus vessel, which produced positive results. The company therefore decided to roll out an oil change to Mobil Delvac 1640 across its entire fleet with the support and guidance of ExxonMobil engineers.
Mobil Delvac 1640 was proven to reduce the build-up in lacquering, sludge and carbon deposits, as well as gradually clean away the existing deposits across all engine components. Cleaning and maintenance time and costs dramatically reduced since the changeover, with simple checks highlighting no new deposits or damage.
With the resolution of these issues Polarcus has been able to keep vessels running, avoiding further maintenance downtime and potential operating losses. In addition, through the introduction of Mobil Delvac 1640, Polarcus has also been able to lower oil consumption dramatically, by an average of 28 per cent.
