ExxonMobil awards scholarships in support of advancing aviation education in Asia Pacific

  • Multi-year scholarship program will offer educational opportunities to Civil Aviation University of China students seeking a career in the aviation maintenance industry
  • Program will support aviation education and the increasing need for aviation technicians throughout the Asia Pacific region
  • 268,000 new technical personnel will be needed over the next 20 years

Shanghai, China ExxonMobil announced the company is establishing a scholarship program with the Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC), beginning in the 2017 – 2018 school year, to help support students pursuing their Bachelor’s degree in engine propulsion and aviation systems. The multi-year scholarship program underscores ExxonMobil’s recognition of the importance of education and commitment to supporting students seeking a career in the aviation maintenance industry.

Competitively selected by a panel from CAUC, students are judged based on their academic and disciplinary performance, as well as special skill sets. Recipients must be ranked in the top ten percent in their class and have completed Level 6 of their College English Test (CET) requirement.

“ExxonMobil is a trusted and reliable supplier of high-quality lubricants and fuels to the aviation industry and we’re committed to investing in the industry’s future.” said Nancy Carlson, vice president of aviation and marine GBU, ExxonMobil Fuels and Lubricants. “In this instance, our efforts to promote excellence in aviation go well beyond the tarmac and into the classroom. We look forward to seeing the impact these students will have on our industry.”

The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines confirms that Asia Pacific carriers account for 33 percent of global commercial aviation traffic and that the market is growing at a steady rate.i In light of this growth, Boeing projects that the market will add 268,000 new technicians over the next two decades.ii

Helping meet the significant growth in the region, CAUC is dedicated to fostering the education and advancement of engineering technicians and senior management for the civil aviation industry. Founded in 1951, more than 100,000 students have graduated from CAUC, of which, roughly 80 percent are employed within the aviation industry, forming one-third of its engineering and management workforce.

“CAUC values the interaction and cooperation of companies within the aviation industry and we welcome ExxonMobil’s support in setting up this scholarship program,” said CAUC president Dong Jiankang. “We aspire to have a progressive collaboration with ExxonMobil and believe this award will help contribute to the development of the Chinese aviation industry.”
