Fuelling confidence through a trusted relationship

Arnaud Le Poulichet, Director of Engineering and Maintenance at Brittany Ferries, explains his company’s approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Brittany-Ferries and ExxonMobil have done business with each other for 45 years, a long and highly beneficial relationship. As a ferry operator, we have conducted close to 1,000 bunkering operations a year, on short calls, so we need an ultra-efficient supply chain and consistent product quality; ExxonMobil plays a vital role in us achieving these goals.

Of course, there are still a number of challenges, especially around the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) strategy on reducing GHG emissions. As a shipowner, we are making our contribution by investing in ever cleaner vessels, but we also want ExxonMobil to offer us fuels that will enable us to achieve the IMO's targets, on conditions that are viable for our business.

Needless to say, a contract is a contract but on a day-to-day basis it’s also essential to build and maintain trust, which is exactly what we have with ExxonMobil and Whitaker Tankers, who are both doing a great job. We have their ear – this delivers the confidence we’re after. We've known each other for many years, which is ideal as we want to keep our contacts for the long term. Continuity is key.

The proof of our successful relationship with ExxonMobil is evident. We, at Brittany Ferries, have never had any technical problems with the quality of the product and the bunkering operations are always done on time. We take pride in the more than 30,000 successful bunker deliveries we’ve had from ExxonMobil. This 100% success rate has been a cornerstone of our relationship*.

We always seek out contacts that can help us with our vision and commitment to the IMO’s GHG emission targets. We also want to work with companies that are open minded and collaborative. The sharing of ideas and concerns is essential if we’re to achieve the best solutions.

About Brittany Ferries’ environmental commitments

Also, as a signatory of the Sails Charter, we are committed to reducing our impact by investing in an eco-responsible future, reducing our footprint at sea and on land, supporting research, collaborating with NGOs and raising customer awareness during sailings. The DNA of Brittany Ferries is to provide the best services to our customers with the best environmental impact.
