Used oil analysis helps extend piston overhaul interval

“K” Line Ship Management extended the piston overhaul period of the M/V Hamburg Bridge by implementing ExxonMobil’s Mobil Serv℠ Cylinder Condition Monitoring in combination with Mobilgard™ 560 VS cylinder oil.

The manufacturer-recommended piston overhaul period for the vessel’s MAN K98ME engine was 16,000 hours. However, an inspection revealed that after more than 20,000 hours the pistons and piston rings were free of deposits and exhibited negligible wear.

“K” Line Ship Management safely extended the piston overhaul period by 25 per cent more than the manufacturer’s recommendation, which helped reduced maintenance costs and associated downtime.
